A change of perspective

About a week ago, we were travelling back from Bulgaria with the team. For those that do not know, I play for a hockey team here in Greece. Namely, Aris Thessaloniki. We went to Bulgaria to practice, given that there are absolutely zero ice rinks in my home town. Practice, hockey and the rest are not something I want to talk about right now however... that's something of a back story.

So, as I was saying, we were travelling back from Bulgaria. There were fewer players that made the trip this time. One could have only attributed it to the lack of funds that has been plaguing all of us as of late. The bus we usually rent held half as many people than usual.

The exhausting schedule, had made everybody worn down, lacking the energy to perform even the most basic of functions. Even talking caused our muscles to ache. So, it goes without saying that the majority of my team mates were passed out... and there was a beautiful silence about that I was appreciative of.

In that silence, as I was laying on two seats, with my head against the window, I just looked up. It was getting darker, and you could see the stars twinkling in the through the crystal clear, freezing air. Then a thought just hit me. I don't dare claim it was original, nor that it was inspiring or revolutionary. That thought is simply summed up as a change of perspective.

Ever notice how everyone, that walks down the street, instinctively looks at the ground? Yeah it does help with avoiding dog poo, etc., but why do we always look down? Even when we are simply sitting down, how often is it that we are looking up? It's not that the sky has anything less interesting going on with it than the ground. At least not in my opinion. On crystal clear day you can see the blue of the sky, and the white of the clouds. It has always been a favourite game of mine to try and guess what animal or even person the shapes of clouds form. On a crystal clear night... oh during the night... so many stars, the moon, and if you are lucky you could see a falling star just like I did a week ago. There are just so many things that we are missing out on. Simply fantastic!

The point is... why do we always look down? Maybe with the stuff that has been going on lately it would be useful for all of us to have a change of perspective. Maybe it's time that we look up when we sit down... take in all the beauty of this world instead of just looking around for dog poo. You can always clean out the poo, and it ain't pretty when it happens, but how often will it be before you next see a falling star?
