Remember remember the fifth of November....
Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot,
I see no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Let's see... it has been a long while since i wrote something... anything... I was imagining that this would have been an even larger post than the previous one but it fails to meet up to the expectations (depending on how high one has set the bar).
Four days from now, a month would have passed since i joined the ranks of the Greek army. Day has turned into night and night into day... I remember nothing specific right now.. everything is but an amalgamation of images, sounds, and reactions. A more careful reader would start asking themselves: "What were the actions that caused the reaction?". A fair warning to all.. this post will be exactly what the subtitle of the blog says... "Random". Feel free to join in the madness.
So a month ago, i enlisted. I arrived at the city of Thiva, around 5 in the morning. I was supposed to show up at camp around 8... so i decided to just roam around the empty streets and to soak up as much as i could to familiarize myself with the city. After walking around a couple of streets, i realised that there was really nothing more to it. Yeah the city center itself is not bigger than lets say, whiteoaks mall. Regardless, i managed to avoid mass rape by some pakistani roaming the streets in search of a, somewhat young (at 27 i can hardly call my self a young stud... just stud :P ) goodlooking (refer to stud), man.
I went to camp at 8 and i was greeted by the military police with the phrase: "Come back at 9, and don't be in a rush to get bored". With a lingering question i departed and said no more. Going back at 9, and seeing that no one had arrived yet (damn greek time), i entered and started going through a labyrinth of bureaucracy. It took us approximately 7 hours to register, get our equipment, go through medical examination (by a very sexy physician btw).
After 7 hours, of running around like idiots, we get summoned by the second lieutenant who is shouting at us to gather in front of the main building, in uniform and with our berets at hand. We do as we were told, and the officer starts telling us that since we would have the appearance that we have been in training for a while, and because the training camp is short staffed we are to guide those still in line through the same process we just went through. Basically we were told to act like superior officers since the newcomers would not know the difference :/ ... Let me tell you... it's amazing what a man in uniform can command others to do... i have had a taste of power.. AND I LIKED IT MUHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHHA... *ehm*... it took forever to actually prove to the newcomers that i was only a few hours ahead of them in line :P Those were good times :)
In short, my time in the military has been going by really fast. First week they tried to get us ready for our oath ceremony... where we swear allegiance to the flag, and to protect the constitution against all enemies.
Then they started introducing us to our duties; Guard, cleaning and serving duties. Basically we are all responsible for cleaning the toilets... daily... (and you will be surprised to learn how many actually miss the target trying to go here ). We are all responsible for guarding our comrades(?) and our weaponry.. you get the picture.
Getting our weapons was pretty cool .. they taught us how to use them (shots were fired ... yay!) and how to fall faster than a gun being dropped to the ground so that we can take push ups :).. Marching to shoot our guns kinda sucks since it adds up to about 5k to shoot 10 bullets and then return. But the rush you get is exhilarating. In total we shot 4 times.. 3 with with our rifle, and once with with a machine gun.
The rest of our time went by really as previously.. cleaning, serving, and guarding. I really have no complains.. "it's a life of quiet dignity"...
Once again sorry that this post is not more informative, or more entertaining. The splitting headache does not allow for creative writting. I do have a few pictures of me (the existance of which i will deny) but i can't publish them.. those with a gmail account will receive a link, when i have them.
Before i go, a big shout out to Tall, Gler, Zoi, D., Aki, George and all those who kept me company through the late night guard duties, by phone or text.
Cheers
Petros
